Having worked at Spring Valley for the past 6 years, I believe that this upcoming art exhibition is an excellent opportunity to showcase the talent and creativity of the students at our school. Ethnically diverse, culturally rich, and academically focused, Spring Valley Science School provides an authentic representation of what a San Francisco elementary public school truly is.
Our Kindergarten through 5th-grade elementary school has both a Chinese Bilingual and Spanish Bilingual program, as well as a culturally diverse General Education program that puts a heavy emphasis on building on the knowledge and experiences that the kids bring with them from home. Working together with our 4th and 5th graders these past 5 years, I have witnessed how Nine Studio has provided a unique opportunity to allow our students to express what they know about community and culture through the hands-on experience of working in a professional art studio that is located just down the street.
The main theme of this year’s “Spring Show” mainly involves representing the people and places that are near and dear to our Spring Valley community. The artwork that the students are generating for this project is based on their homes, favorite locations around the neighborhood, and the everyday folks that they see as heroes. As a teacher, it makes me proud to see what these students are able to come up with. It’s amazing to watch as these kids include their own distinct flair to what they are creating; something that is uniquely them both personally and culturally.
What excites me most about this year’s project is how it is student-focused, and designed to generate awareness of our school and the beautiful neighborhood it is located in. Dating back to its founding in 1852, Spring Valley Science School itself is one of the oldest schools in California, and remains a hidden gem in the middle of Nob Hill. Having spent the majority of my teaching career here at Spring Valley Science School, my hope is that through our “Spring Show” with Nine Studio, this can be a platform where our school can begin to reach out and build genuine, long-lasting relationships with the wonderful people and local businesses in the area.
